Music and Arts Festival - April 1 - April 17, 2019

The Kiwanis Music Arts Festival of St. Catharines

Welcome everyone, to the 88th annual Kiwanis Music and Arts Festival of St. Catharines. As the new Chair of the Festival, I have some big shoes to fill. Under the guidance of Peter Brown, a Past Lieutenant Governor of the Kiwanis Golden Horseshoe Division 6, this festival has moved forward to the point where a new record was set. Twenty-five students from our Festival advanced to the Provincial Competitions during 2018. My sincere thanks to Peter for his leadership and dedication to this Festival for the past six years.

Everything comes full circle in life. During the early 70’s I started competing in the Kiwanis Music Festival in Peterborough, Ontario, first in primary school with choirs, then in secondary school with bands. We had great music teachers which resulted in many successes, winning four Provincial Titles and one National Championship during my high school years. When it came time to give back to my community, Kiwanis was first on my mind and today, life has come full circle as I take on the role of the Chair of the Kiwanis Music and Arts Festival here in St. Catharines.

Parents who offer the opportunity for their children to learn how to play a musical instrument, take singing lessons, or participate in speech arts, understand that this learning process will stay with their kids for life. It teaches discipline, patience and instils pride and confidence. Tools that will stay with them and prepare them for any career path they may follow.

I appreciate all the efforts of music teachers, adjudicators, volunteers, our administrator Claudette Borowski, and our Music Festival Discipline Chairs, George Cleland (strings), Jeanne teSligte (piano), Anne Deyme (band), Cheryl Stevens (woodwinds/brass), Brenda McFadgen (voice), Tom MacDonald (guitar) and Deanna Spironello (speech) , Deanna Smith (speech)who each and every year, give a large amount of their free time to attend meetings and organize a successful festival.

The festival would not be viable without the support of our sponsors. They understand the value that music brings to a child’s life and we ask you to patronize their businesses whenever possible. One of the major sponsors over the past several years has been the Kiwanis Club of St. Catharines, a group of volunteers dedicated to improving lives, one child and one community at a time. Please consider joining this dedicated group of volunteers.

I ask all grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, neighbours and friends to encourage children to start or continue with the study of music. A skill that will remain with them for life!

Make plans now to attend the “Festival of Stars”, on Monday, May 27, 2019, where some of the best talent in our area will be showcased and scholarship awards will be presented. Truly, a family event.
