Rules & Regulations - 2019

  1. The Festival shall be known as “The Kiwanis Music and Arts Festival of St. Catharines.”
  2. Each discipline notes specific details. Please review before registering.
  3. The Ontario Music Festivals Association (OMFA) holds a Provincial Festival each year. As a member of the Ontario Music Festivals Association, The Kiwanis Music and Arts Festival of St. Catharines can recommend up to two competitors in different disciplines/categories and age levels to advance to the Provincial Festival.
  4. Any questions not specifically covered in these Rules & Regulations shall be referred to the Rules and Regulations Committee, whose decisions on such matters shall be final and binding. The Chair, or any member of the Festival Committee, is empowered to enforce all rules appearing in the Syllabus.
  5. Entries will be accepted from January 1, 2019 to February 15, 2019. Log into your Solarislive account to register.
  6. Late entries will not be accepted.
  7. Entry fees cannot be refunded except in the case of an entry being rejected by the committee or reason approved by the Festival Chair.
  8. The Festival Committee reserves the right to close entries to the competition in any discipline in the case of unforeseen circumstances.
  9. All classes, unless otherwise stated, shall be open to amateurs only. For the purpose of this festival, an amateur shall be defined as follows, “Any person, who in the 12-month period preceding the 2019 Festival year, has not received remuneration of $2,500 or more for the profession or practice of music or other performing arts OR is a member of ACTRA or EQUITY unions”.
  10. In all Classes where an age limit is set, the competitor shall be no older than the prescribed age on December 31 prior to the festival year.
  11. Age categories are listed at the beginning of each discipline’s rules.
  12. In an Ensemble or Duet class, a competitor shall be permitted to perform more than once, provided such competitor performs a different part each time.   Age should be taken as the oldest competitor in the ensemble or duet.
  13. Conductors may be amateur or professional and may conduct any number of ensembles in the same Class or in any number of Classes. However, a conductor may neither sing nor play any of the parts unless it is a piano or organ accompaniment required by the arrangement.
  14. Competitors will be disqualified and removed from the festival premises without a refund if found with, or under the influence of, drugs or alcoholic beverages.
  15. It is the responsibility of each competitor to arrange for his or her own accompaniment.
  16. Solo performances must be memorized to compete in Classes.
  17. Repeats are not to be played except in the case of first and second endings and if the repeat is of short duration (eg., approximately eight measures).
  18. Photocopied music is not permitted. Please respect copyright rules when performing at the Kiwanis Music and Arts Festival of St. Catharines.
  19. In “Own Choice” Classes, the selection must be of artistic merit comparable to the set pieces in the same section, otherwise 10% of the marks may be deducted.
  20. Competitors may not use selections performed by them during the preceding two years at The Kiwanis Music and Arts Festival of St. Catharines.
  21. An original copy of the selection, with the book open to the selection, must be provided by the competitor for the Adjudicator before the start of the Class, otherwise, the performance shall be adjudicated without marks. Adjudicators copies must be reclaimed at the secretary’s desk immediately after the Class.
  22. All competitors and their accompanist are expected to be in the venue at least 15 minutes before the program times listed for their Classes. Failure to be present at the start time of the Class may result in disqualification.
  23. The Chair reserves the right to divide any Class into two or more sections should the number of entries warrant.
  24. A performance may be stopped at any time when the Adjudicator’s opinion has been formed. The Adjudicator’s decision shall be final.
  25. Competitors must perform in the exact order indicated on the performance schedule. The Chair reserves the right to change the order when necessary.
  26. Protests regarding Adjudicators’ evaluations will only be accepted in writing via mail to our Festival address or emailed to our Festival Coordinator. No communication may be made with the Adjudicator at any time.
  27. Proof of age may be required to be produced to the Chair at any time prior, during, or after the competition.
  28. Competitors (male and female) are required to bow (not curtsy) at the conclusion of their performance.
  29. Professional accompanists should be contacted at least one month prior to the Festival. Your accompanist may charge a fee for both rehearsal time and Festival performance.
